Pictures from Private Collections in Memory of Solomon Shuster (1934 – 1995)

Exhibition of over forty pictures from private collections in Moscow and St Petersburg in memory of famous collector Solomon Shuster, one of the last members of a galaxy of Russian connoisseurs who regarded collecting as a profession. In the 1960s and 1970s, Shuster put together an outstanding collection of Russian figurative art of the first third of the twentieth century. The exhibition showed works by famous Russian artists – Nathan Altman, Georges Annenkoff, David Burliuk, Robert Falk, Natalia Goncharova, Pyotr Kontchalovsky, Pavel Kuznetsov, Mikhail Larionov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Ilya Mashkov and Niko Pirosmani – and such lesser known names as Nadezhda Lermontova, a student of Léon Bakst who died young. Many of the paintings have not been seen for many years.
